    Two-minute read

Emiliano Viviano revealed he faced Santi Cazorla’s criticism after arriving to an Arsenal match inebriated, a moment he described as nearly causing a panic attack. The incident occurred during the 2013/14 season, where Viviano, on loan from Palermo, failed to make any appearances due to fierce competition in goal, ultimately missing out on an FA Cup winner’s medal.

Emiliano Viviano recalls Santi Cazorla’s strong words after Arsenal mishap

Emiliano Viviano has shared insights from his time at Arsenal, revealing that Santi Cazorla referred to him as ‘disgusting’ after he arrived at a match smelling of alcohol. This incident occurred shortly before Arsenal’s match against Everton in the 2013/14 season and has resurfaced as Viviano reflects on his career in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport published this weekend.

Viviano, who played as a goalkeeper for the Gunners on a loan deal from Palermo, made no appearances during his year at the club due to competition from Wojciech Szczesny and Lucasz Fabianski. Despite Arsenal lifting their 11th FA Cup that year, Viviano was ineligible for a winner’s medal.

    Viviano’s brief spell at Arsenal

The former Italy international recalled his experience of being called up last minute for the Everton match after Fabianski fell ill. Viviano admitted, “I had drunk half a bottle of vodka” the night before and felt unprepared when he arrived at Goodison Park. Cazorla’s comment during that time left him feeling anxious, stating, “It was the only time in my life I almost had a panic attack.”

    Reflections on his career

In the interview, Viviano discussed his challenges and successes, including being Gianluigi Buffon’s understudy in the national squad. He expressed frustration at being overlooked for Italy’s Euro 2012 squad, attributing the decision to politics within the team. He said, “It was a stab from [Cesare] Prandelli.”

Looking ahead, Viviano is contemplating a coaching role, stating, “I’m fascinated by the coaches’ communication.” However, he is also aware of the intense demands the job entails.

Viviano retired from professional football in 2024, concluding a career that included a notable time at Ascoli following his loan spell at Arsenal.
