Eddie Howe confirms Anthony Gordon absence and hopes for Bruno Guimaraes return
Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has announced that Anthony Gordon is set to miss Newcastle’s upcoming match against Brentford on Saturday, while expressing optimism that Bruno Guimaraes could return. This update comes as Newcastle is searching for a much-needed turnaround after failing to secure a win in their last four games.
Bruno Guimaraes has been sidelined since sustaining an ankle injury during last month’s Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven. Howe indicated that Guimaraes is “getting closer” to a return, having trained positively. “He did a training session on Wednesday when we were travelling and felt pretty good,” Howe said. “So, I will see him today and fingers crossed he will be fit.”
In contrast, the news is less encouraging for Gordon, who sustained a hamstring injury during the first half of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City. Howe stated, “I think there is every chance he will miss this game but we are hoping it is not a serious injury and he will be back pretty soon.”
Newcastle are looking to address their recent mixed form, which has seen them drop to 11th in the Premier League table, eight points off a top-four position. Howe emphasised the motivation within the squad, stating, “My message is that we are fighting and I think you can see that on the pitch.” The team will aim to secure a positive outcome against Brentford as they seek to revive their league campaign.
