Tonight on The Ring: Who should pay for Europe’s defence and security?

    TL;DR

    • The EU is undertaking its largest rearmament initiative since the 1950s, prompted by increased concerns over defence and security following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
    • A significant majority of Europeans (around 80%) express worry about the EU’s security in the next five years, raising questions about the financial commitment to defence.
    • Key topics for discussion include the potential for an EU nuclear deterrent, the development of military capabilities, and the evolving nature of warfare with advances in drone technology.

Since Russia’s full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, the EU and its Member States are taking on the largest rearmament effort since the 1950s. Recent research says almost 8 in 10 Europeans are concerned about the EU’s defence and security in the next five years, but are they willing to pay for it?

Tonight on Euronews’ brand new debating show The Ring, we will ask MEPs Martin Schirdewan from The Left and Riho Terras, a former army general from the European People’s Party what this investment in defence will mean for Europeans. Broadcasting from the European Parliament in Brussels, we will give you a glimpse of the actual debates taking place in Strasbourg and Brussels.

Defence budgets are spiking, arms factories are reopening and the European Commission is pushing for EU countries to buy more European arms together and therefore reduce dependencies on Uncle Sam.

Should the EU develop its own nuclear deterrent strategy? Can the EU ever be a real military power? Will future wars be won with drones, not tanks? Some of the questions we will explore tonight.

You can watch The Ring on Euronews tonight at 20h30. Tune in!
