Jack Doohan Set for Super Formula Switch as F1 Return Chances Fade

Australian driver Jack Doohan is poised to join Toyota’s Super Formula lineup for the 2026 season, signalling a shift in his aspirations as his Formula 1 opportunities with Alpine dwindle. Having been relegated to reserve status after the early races of the current F1 season, Doohan’s move to the Japanese single-seater series could see him take on critical reserve duties away from his Alpine role.

    Doohan’s Challenging F1 Journey

Doohan’s recent demotion from a primary F1 seat to reserve status for Alpine has prompted him to seek other racing opportunities. With Franco Colapinto likely to remain the team’s reserve driver for 2026, Doohan is exploring prospects in Super Formula, a move that could rejuvenate his racing career.

    A New Chapter: Kondo Racing

Reports suggest that Doohan is in line for a seat with Toyota-powered Kondo Racing in Super Formula. Insider sources indicate that negotiations are advanced, with Toyota global motorsport director Masaya Kaji hinting at the possibility when he stated, “There’s nothing concrete I can say now, but he is a good driver.” This clear interest marks an encouraging pivot for Doohan, who aims for a significant role in Japanese motorsport.

    Family Ties: Influencing Decisions

Doohan’s father, Mick Doohan, a five-time motorcycle Grand Prix world champion, has reportedly been actively involved in discussions regarding potential placements for his son. Recently seen in the paddock at the Super GT season finale, Mick’s involvement underscores the importance of familial support in navigating the complexities of the motorsport landscape.

Implications for the Toyota Driver Line-up

Doohan’s anticipated arrival at Kondo Racing could lead to unexpected shifts within the Toyota Super Formula driver roster. British driver Zak O’Sullivan, who currently drives for Kondo, may see his position jeopardized despite showing promise with two points finishes this season. The expected reshuffle also casts doubt on the future of other drivers, such as Impul’s Oliver Rasmussen, who is facing challenges in securing a meaningful position for the upcoming season.

    Fresh Faces in Super Formula

In addition to Doohan, Toyota has plans for further recruitment, with two-time World Rally champion Kalle Rovanpera also set to join the ranks. Rovanpera’s transition to Super Formula adds an exciting dimension to the series, and his debut will occur during the rookie test at Suzuka in December.

The influx of new talent like Doohan and Rovanpera promises to shake up the competitive landscape of Super Formula, steering it into a new era of racing excellence. As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on these developments to see how the teams and drivers pivot in their strategies for success.
