Cliff Notes – Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to reunite for Mummy film reboot with hit horror directors

    • Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to reprise their roles in a new sequel to The Mummy, with the directing team behind the recent Scream films, Radio Silence, attached to the project.
    • The original Mummy film, released in 1999, was a significant box office success, grossing over $422.5 million globally, and has since become a beloved classic.
    • Universal’s previous attempt to reboot the franchise in 2017 with Tom Cruise was not commercially successful, highlighting the enduring appeal of Fraser and Weisz’s original collaboration.

The Mummy series is officially being rebooted for a fourth film, with the team behind the recent Scream films set to direct.

Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser starred in the hit action-adventure films during the late nineties and early 2000s – and now they’re set to reunite.

The stars are said to be in talks to star in a new sequel for The Mummy, with Radio Silence reportedly on board to direct, according to Variety.

Filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet were behind 2019’s Ready or Not and the revival of the Scream films for Paramount in 2022.

The 1999 reboot of The Mummy was a box office hit.

In it, a cursed Egyptian priest with supernatural powers was accidentally awoken by a treasure hunter, played by Fraser.

At the time, the film grossed over $422.5 million (£324.5 million).

Fraser continued with two more of the films, while Weisz just did the 2001 film, The Mummy Returns. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor came out in 2008.

In 2017, Universal attempted to resurrect the franchise with Tom Cruise, but it wasn’t a commercial success.

Speaking about the 2017 film, Fraser said: ‘The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun.’

It’s unclear who else could return in the franchise.

Metro has contacted Universal, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for comment.
