Williams F1 to Revive Iconic ‘W’ Logo for 2026 Season
Williams Racing has confirmed the return of its historic ‘W’ logo for the 2026 Formula 1 season, marking a nostalgic nod to its triumphant past. The reimagined emblem, described as a “21st-century interpretation” of Frank Williams’ famous ‘Forward W’, harkens back to the team’s golden era when it celebrated numerous title victories.
A Glorious Heritage
Founded in 1977, Williams Racing etched its name in Formula 1 history with an astonishing nine Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ Championships. The original ‘Forward W’ logo adorned every championship-winning car until its removal in 2000, when Williams partnered with BMW. More recently, a modified, straighter version of the ‘W’ had been used, but the resurgence of the classic design signals a bold statement about the team’s ambitions.
Moving Forward Under New Ownership
After being sold to U.S.-based Dorilton Capital in 2019, and following the passing of founder Frank Williams in 2021, the team has been rejuvenated under new leadership. Team principal James Vowles expressed excitement about the future: “As a team, we are inspired by our past but excited about our future, committed to writing a new championship-winning chapter in Williams’ history.” This shift aims to re-engage a new generation of F1 fans while also reconnecting with their storied legacy.
Current Form and Future Aspirations
Williams Racing’s recent form has demonstrated significant progress; the team currently sits fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. The return of Carlos Sainz, who secured a podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, has been a catalyst for improvement. With 111 points accumulated so far this season, the team has outperformed its last seven campaigns combined.
A New Identity for a New Era
From 2026, Williams will officially compete as the Atlassian Williams F1 Team. This name change follows the partnership with the American-Australian software company, which became the team’s title partner in early 2025. As Williams embarks on this new chapter, the reintroduction of the historic logo serves as both a tribute to the past and a symbol of hope for a competitive resurgence in the sport.
With these strategic moves and a renewed identity, Williams is poised to return to the front of the grid, targeting competitiveness under the upcoming regulatory changes that may reshape the F1 landscape.
