    .

Three girls who surrounded a 75-year-old man before he was shoved, kicked and punched, and then died the following a day, have been detained.

Fredi Rivero, a Bolivian national, was near a bus stop in north London when the girls got off and surrounded him.

They walked away but later returned, and shoved, kicked and punched him – while one of them recorded the attack on their phone.

The three girls, who were aged 17, 16 and 14 at the time of the crime and cannot be named because of their age, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

At the Old Bailey on Friday, Judge Judy Khan KC sentenced the girls to four years, three-and-a-half years and two-and-a-half years’ detention respectively.

Police were called to reports of the disturbance in Seven Sisters Road in Islington at about 11.35pm on 27 February.

They found Mr Rivero unconscious on the pavement with a severe head injury and in cardiac arrest.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital, where he later died.

In her victim impact statement, Mr Rivero’s daughter Carla Rivero, told the Old Bailey “it wasn’t my Dad’s time to die”.

“His death was forced upon him by three girls,” she said, adding he was “the nicest person you could ever meet, so kind, never bothered anyone”.

She said the attack had left her “questioning what type of generation of youths is being raised as a result of all this”.

Ms Rivero said her mother “feels heartbroken and devastated and she cries every day” and “feels scared when she sees youths in the street”.

    ‘Senseless attack on lone man’

She said: “My dad will be remembered and honoured for the kind and peaceful person he was, not in the manner of which his life was taken.”

Detective Inspector Devan Taylor, from Scotland Yard, previously described the incident as a “senseless and completely out-of-the-blue attack on a lone, elderly man”.

He added: “I know how much his death has impacted those close to him and the wider community.”

    ‘Enormity of their actions’

“I would like to offer my heart-felt sympathy to Mr Rivero’s family for their loss and express my admiration for the dignity they have shown throughout the investigation.

“I also wish to thank the members of public who went to Mr Rivero’s aid as he lay injured.

“The age of the defendants adds to the devastating nature of this incident and they will now have to deal with the enormity of their actions.”
