Verstappen Pauses GT3 Outings Until 2026: F1 Regulations Influence Decision

Max Verstappen has announced a temporary halt to his participation in GT3 racing for the remainder of 2023, as he shifts his focus to the complexities of the Formula 1 regulations set to be introduced in 2026. The Red Bull Racing star has expressed a desire to compete in next year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours but acknowledges that his plans will be largely dictated by upcoming changes in F1.

    Verstappen’s Recent GT3 Success

Verstappen, alongside fellow racer Chris Lulham, clinched victory in the ninth round of the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie while driving an Emil Frey Racing Ferrari 296 GT3. Despite the euphoria of their win, the Dutch driver is now prioritising his commitments in Formula 1.

    Balancing F1 and GT3 Commitments

With the F1 season intensifying and numerous clashes in scheduling, Verstappen has confirmed that he will not return to GT3 racing for the rest of this year. “It’s a lot of fun,” he stated regarding his recent GT3 outing. “I’ve been preparing for that for a while, and it’s just getting more and more experience.”

    The Impact of 2026 Regulations

Looking ahead, Verstappen revealed that the introduction of new F1 regulations could complicate his racing schedule. “I suspect that with the rules next year it’s going to be very complicated to start with, with some unknowns anyway,” he said. As F1 gears up for substantial regulatory shifts, Verstappen’s focus remains on adapting to the changes while still aspiring to participate in GT3 events.

    Optimism for Future Races

While currently sidelined from GT3, Verstappen remains optimistic about returning to sportscar racing in the future, particularly when he eventually moves on from F1. “It’s also just making sure that everything is well run with the GT3 team,” he commented, noting that ample opportunities will exist later in his racing career.

    Commitment to Formula 1

Verstappen has reiterated his commitment to Formula 1 as his primary focus. “F1 is still my main goal,” he affirmed. “It’s a lot of races but that’s what I signed up for, so I’m not upset about it.” He remains enthusiastic about the potential of balancing both disciplines in the longer term, provided that opportunities align with his F1 schedule.

As the F1 landscape evolves with impending regulatory complexities, Verstappen’s determination to excel in both Formula 1 and GT3 underscores his commitment to his racing career while navigating the intricate demands of professional motorsport.
