In the Premier League, Manchester United and Chelsea played through a downpour and a flurry of red cards, but it was the Red Devils who earned a vital 2-1 win. Robert Sánchez was sent off after just five minutes, and while Casemiro picked up a red of his own on the stroke of halftime, his goal and the opener from Bruno Fernandes were enough to see off the visiting Blues.
Earlier, Liverpool held on to beat Everton 2-1 in the first Merseyside derby of the season and Tottenham Hotspur came back from a 2-0 deficit against Brighton & Hove Albion to seal a 2-2 draw. Elsewhere, Burnley vs. Nottingham Forest finished 1-1, West Ham United lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace, and Wolverhampton Wanderers fell 3-1 to Leeds United.
In LaLiga, Real Madrid defeated Espanyol 2-0, while Harry Kane netted a hat trick for Bayern Munich in a 4-1 win over Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
