Jair Bolsonaro hospitalised after feeling ‘unwell’
Former Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro, who was recently convicted of attempting a coup, was taken to hospital from his house arrest on Tuesday after feeling “unwell,” his son Flavio said.
According to a post on Flavio Bolsonaro’s X account, the 70-year-old former leader felt “a severe bout of hiccups, vomiting, and low blood pressure.”
He also described the situation as an “emergency,” asking people to “pray that it’s nothing serious.”
The former Brazilian president’s wife Michelle said on Instagram that Bolsonaro was receiving medication and being examined.
Bolsonaro has been hospitalised multiple times after being stabbed during his 2018 election campaign and is a close friend to president Trump, who has levied 50% tariffs on Brazil, until he released.
Why is Bolsonaro under house arrest?
Bolsonaro was last week convicted of plotting a coup to overthrow Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s current president, following his 2022 election loss.
He was sentenced to 27 years in prison, with his lawyers saying they will appeal the verdict due to the former leader denying any wrongdoing.
US President Donald Trump, a friend of Bolsonaro, called the trial a “witch hunt” and mentioned the former president’s trial as part of his reasons for imposing 50% tariffs on Brazil.
Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since early August after the justice overseeing the case, Alexandre de Moraes, said the 70-year-old had violated precautionary measures imposed on him for the trial. Brazil’s ex-President Bolsonaro sentenced to 27 years prison.
