Canadian Grand Prix Start Time Adjusted to Avoid Indianapolis 500 Clash

In a strategic move to prevent overlapping broadcast schedules, the start time for the Canadian Grand Prix has been pushed back to 4 p.m. local time (9 p.m. BST) for the upcoming season. This adjustment comes as both the Canadian race and the renowned Indianapolis 500 are set to take place on the same day, May 24, 2026.

The decision to move the Canadian Grand Prix to the Memorial Day weekend was made to keep freight logistics efficient following the Miami Grand Prix. This year, the cyclical journey back to Europe was deemed impractical, prompting F1 to rethink its schedule.

Upon the announcement, concerns were raised about the potential scheduling clash with the Indianapolis 500, traditionally starting at 12.45 p.m. local time.

However, by delaying the Canadian GP’s start time by two hours from its previous 2 p.m. schedule, F1 has effectively created a 3 hour and 15-minute window to accommodate fans and viewers of both events.

    Impact on Viewership

With the Indianapolis 500 having completed its last five iterations in under three hours, the new timetable offers a sensible overlap reduction, allowing fans to engage with both iconic races. However, F1 acknowledges that weather conditions may still pose a risk of delays, which could affect timing.

F1 has assured stakeholders that clashes between the Canadian Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500 will occur only once every five years, meaning no further overlaps are expected from 2027 to 2030.

This strategic planning is aimed at maximising audience engagement in both motorsport formulas.

    Canadian Grand Prix

The Canadian Grand Prix remains a crucial event in the Formula 1 calendar, showcasing thrilling competition and significant fan engagement. With George Russell’s recent win in 2025 still fresh in memory, anticipation is already building for the next edition.
