Max Verstappen Gains GT3 License Ahead of Nurburgring Ambitions

Max Verstappen is now officially licensed to compete in GT3 cars, marking a significant milestone for the reigning Formula 1 champion as he sets his sights on the challenging Nurburgring Nordschleife. Having raced a Porsche Cayman 718 GT4 CS at the ADAC ACAS Cup last weekend, Verstappen’s newfound credentials open the door for ambitious pursuits in the world of endurance racing.

From Formula 1 to the Green Hell

Verstappen’s journey to acquiring his DMSB Permit A was not without its hurdles. Despite encountering issues that prevented him from completing his first race under permit conditions, a committee reviewed his case and ultimately granted him the necessary license.

    Next Steps in GT3 Racing

With this permit now in hand, Verstappen is poised to tackle his next challenge: competing in GT3 races. The first opportunity arises during the off-weekend between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, where he is expected to enter the ADAC Barbarossapreis. This four-hour event, set for 27 September, will see him behind the wheel of a Ferrari 296 GT3 from Swiss team Emil Frey Racing, a vehicle with which he has previous experience.

The Nurburgring 24 Hours: A Personal Goal

Among his aspirations, the Nurburgring 24 Hours stands out as a crown jewel in his racing ambitions. The race is scheduled for 15-17 May 2026, perfectly aligning with a three-week gap in the F1 calendar. “To contest a 24-hour race here, in a GT3 car, would be amazing,” Verstappen remarked, highlighting the allure of the notorious track known for its demanding corners and elevation changes.

    Embracing Endurance Racing

Verstappen’s enthusiasm for the Nordschleife stems from a desire for authentic racing experiences. “I wish we had 24 of those on the calendar,” he stated last year, reflecting on his appreciation for traditional road circuits over urban street tracks. His recent foray into endurance racing has allowed him to gain invaluable experience, navigating a variety of conditions on the fabled racetrack.

A New Chapter as a Team Owner

Looking ahead, Verstappen is also taking strides in team ownership, fielding an Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 EVO in the GT World Challenge Europe. This initiative aims to create pathways for aspiring drivers, promoting a shift from sim racing to real-world competition.

Future Aspirations: The Le Mans 24 Hours

As he immerses himself in endurance racing, Verstappen’s broader ambitions could see him targeting the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours, an event that has increasingly embraced GT3 machinery. However, whether this will come to fruition remains contingent on his timeline with F1.

As the Dutchman explores new avenues in his racing career, his reputation as a multifaceted competitor continues to grow, making waves not just in Formula 1, but across the motorsport world.
