Trump-inspired candidate Karol Nawrocki wins Poland’s presidential election

Karol Nawrocki, a conservative historian who takes inspiration from Donald Trump, has narrowly won Poland’s presidential election, securing 50.89% of the vote against liberal, pro-EU candidate Rafał Trzaskowski at 49.11%. Early exit polls suggested a different outcome, with both men initially claiming victory.

Nawrocki campaigned as a defender of traditional Polish values, sceptical of the European Union, and aligned with right-wing American figures. Trzaskowski, 53, advocated for civil partnerships, abortion reform, and closer ties with Brussels.

The tight result highlights a deeply divided electorate. The final days of the campaign were dominated by controversy over Nawrocki’s past, including a disputed flat purchase from a pensioner and his admission of involvement in staged street brawls.

The result has drawn attention from Ukraine, Russia, the EU and the United States, with many seeing it as Poland choosing between liberal modernisation and nationalist conservatism.

    Media Comparisons:

    • BBC News: Described the result as a “knife-edge decision” reflecting Poland’s split between East-facing tradition and West-facing liberalism.
    • Le Monde (France): Warned that Nawrocki’s EU scepticism could further strain Warsaw–Brussels relations.
    • The Telegraph: Celebrated the outcome as a win for national sovereignty and cultural preservation, saying the win is “good for the West but not the EU project.”

    Political Reactions:

    • European Union: Officials expressed concern over potential judicial and civil rights clashes.
    • Ukraine: Kyiv offered restrained congratulations, wary of future military and diplomatic cooperation.
    • United States: The Trump administration has hailed the victory, with the US president saying the country has “picked a winner.”
    • Russia: State media reacted positively, seeing the result as a weakening of Western alignment.
    • Poland (Domestic): Civic Platform warned of increased societal division, while Nawrocki’s allies praised the return to “moral clarity.”

🟠 Sentiment: Polarised Negative – Marked by deep division, uncertainty over Poland’s EU trajectory, and anxieties about democratic backsliding, though celebrated by nationalists and conservative allies.
