Tsunoda has “no idea why I’m slow” after F1 Spanish GP practice

Tsunoda Confounded by Pace Concerns After F1 Spanish GP Practice

Yuki Tsunoda expressed his bewilderment at his performance during the opening practice sessions of the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, admitting he has "no idea why I’m slow." Despite a smooth day on track, the Red Bull driver struggled to match the pace of his teammate Max Verstappen, raising concerns as the team gears up for the race weekend.

A Challenging Day at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

Tsunoda’s Friday sessions were marked by difficulties in achieving a competitive pace. He reported experiencing sliding at both ends of the car, which hindered his ability to set consistent lap times. Clocking in 0.6 seconds behind Verstappen during soft-tyre qualifying simulations, Tsunoda noted that while he made progress from FP1 to FP2, the speed deficit remains unexplained.

“In terms of the first day compared to any other Grand Prix, it felt pretty smooth,” said Tsunoda. “But I just don’t have any idea why I am slow. It’s tough without a massive mistake to point to. We have to see what we can improve, but currently [I’m] struggling.”

    GPS Data Highlights Performance Shortfall

Analysis of GPS data indicates that Tsunoda has been particularly lacking in speed through Turn 9 and Turn 10, further exemplifying the gap between him and Verstappen. As he prepares for a lengthy night focused on finding solutions, Tsunoda remains optimistic about addressing the issues ahead of qualifying.

“Hopefully we can find something; otherwise, it’s really tough,” he added.

    Verstappen’s Optimistic Stance

In contrast, Max Verstappen described his Friday as “OK,” noting a slight improvement in car performance compared to previous weekends. While he acknowledged the challenges of high track temperatures affecting tyre management, he felt a renewed sense of positivity heading into the race.

“The track is always very enjoyable to drive, but I still want more out of the car to feel truly comfortable,” stated Verstappen. “We’ve had worse Fridays, so it was definitely a bit more positive.”

    Looking Ahead to Qualifying

As the teams prepare for qualifying, both drivers will have their work cut out for them. Tsunoda aims to decipher the reasons behind his pace concerns, while Verstappen seeks the enhancements needed to position himself at the front of the grid. With tension building and time running out, all eyes will be on them as they tackle the remaining sessions.

Stay tuned for more updates as the F1 Spanish Grand Prix unfolds.
