“Too early to feel positive” about F1 Monaco GP despite topping FP1 and FP2

Leclerc Tops Monaco Practices, but Keeps Expectations in Check

Charles Leclerc topped both practice sessions ahead of the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver remains cautious, declaring it "too early to feel positive" about a strong race outcome. Despite an early scare with Lance Stroll, Leclerc showed impressive pace on the iconic streets of Monte Carlo.

    A Rocky Start in FP1

Leclerc’s Friday got off to a shaky start when he clipped Stroll’s Aston Martin at the Grand Hotel Hairpin. Fortunately, the Monegasque quickly regained his confidence, setting the fastest time of 1m11.964s, which was just under 0.2 seconds quicker than Max Verstappen.

    Strong Performance in FP2

Continuing his momentum, Leclerc improved his time in FP2 with a blistering lap of 1m11.355s, narrowly beating Oscar Piastri’s times by just 0.038 seconds. The Ferrari driver noted that, despite his earlier reservations about the team’s performance at Monaco, he felt more optimistic but wasn’t ready to raise expectations.

"It’s too early to feel very positive about the weekend, but let’s say that Friday has been very positive for us." Leclerc stated.

    Focus on Qualifying

Leclerc emphasized the importance of qualifying pace ahead of Saturday’s session, particularly on the narrow Monaco circuit where overtaking is notoriously difficult. With a mandatory second pit stop introduced, he acknowledged that strategical decisions could play a crucial role in the race.

    Tire Strategy and Car Performance

Leclerc expressed satisfaction with the performance of his Ferrari on all three Pirelli compounds, hinting at the possibility of using the C5 medium in qualifying to enhance their chances.

"Qualifying is going to be fundamental around here and we’ve got to be starting in front if we want to hope for a good result," he said.

    Hamilton’s Positive Outlook

Teammate Lewis Hamilton also finished the sessions in high spirits, praising the Monaco track as "the best rollercoaster ride." He mentioned that he felt a harmonious connection with the Ferrari package but acknowledged the need for minor adjustments in his driving style.

"There are bits here and there throughout the lap…but I will not be making many changes at all," Hamilton clarified.

    Closing Thoughts

As the teams prepare for an exhilarating qualifying session, Leclerc and Hamilton’s performances signal Ferrari’s potential, but both remain grounded as the realities of Monaco’s demanding circuit set in. With high stakes and even higher expectations, all eyes will be on the Scuderia as they attempt to translate practice speed into qualifying and race success.

Stay tuned for more updates as the weekend unfolds in the glitz and glamour of Monaco.
