General Motors Approved as F1 Engine Supplier for Cadillac Debut in 2029

Formula 1 has taken a significant step towards a new era with the announcement that General Motors has been formally approved as a power unit supplier, set to begin in the 2029 season. The American automotive giant will supply engines for the Cadillac F1 team, which will make its entrance into the championship in 2026, initially racing with Ferrari engines for its first three seasons.

Prelude to a New Chapter: Cadillac’s F1 Entry

Cadillac’s ambition to compete in Formula 1 dates back to 2022, when the project was initially proposed by Andretti Global. The endeavor gained momentum after receiving FIA approval in 2023, paving the way for Cadillac to join the illustrious ranks of F1 teams. With the transition to a full works outfit scheduled for 2029, Cadillac’s commitment to success in this prestigious motorsport league is evident.

Formation of TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC

The new power unit venture has been established by TWG Motorsports in collaboration with General Motors, and it will operate under the name TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC. An extensive development process is currently underway, with plans for a dedicated testing facility near Charlotte, North Carolina, projected to open in 2026 as part of a robust $150 million investment.

    Statements from Key Figures

Russ O’Blenes, CEO of TWG GM Performance Power Units, expressed enthusiasm following the FIA’s approval. "With this approval from the FIA, we will continue to accelerate our efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid," O’Blenes stated in a press release. His comments reflect the team’s commitment to innovation in performance engineering within the sport.

    A Vision for Expansion

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem remarked on the extensive journey both GM and Cadillac have undertaken to break into Formula 1. "Over two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an eleventh team into the FIA Formula One World Championship, guided by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity to our sport," said Ben Sulayem. He underscored the importance of this development not just for GM, but for the sport as a whole.

"The progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile. Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC. as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors," he added.

The Road Ahead: Sustainability and Inclusion

The growing presence of manufacturers like General Motors in Formula 1 is indicative of a broader movement towards sustainability and innovation within motorsport. The FIA’s vision aligns closely with these developments—making the sport more accessible and inclusive while enhancing technology and engaging a diverse fan base.

As the world watches closely, the preparations for Cadillac’s official entry into Formula 1 will undoubtedly spark excitement, anticipation, and renewed competition on the grid, setting the stage for a transformative decade in motorsport.
