Red Bull‘s Mixed Feelings After Jeddah F1 Practice

Max Verstappen expressed optimism following Friday’s practice sessions for the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, stating that Red Bull has discovered a "better" feeling in one-lap pace. However, he also acknowledged that the team’s overall performance, particularly in longer runs, is still "not where I want it to be."

    Practice Performance Overview

The four-time world champion finished third in the second practice session (FP2) but struggled earlier, ending FP1 in ninth place. Verstappen clocked a time just over a quarter of a second slower than the McLarens in FP2, highlighting the competitive nature of the session.

    Long Run Challenges

Despite the smoother track surface and anticipated lower degradation levels, which were expected to benefit Red Bull, Verstappen noted that the long stints remained "tough." The team explored various set-ups throughout the two Friday sessions, but he indicated there is still significant work to be done.

"We tried some different things with the car, trying to find maybe a different direction with it, and I think we learned a lot from it," Verstappen remarked. "In the long runs, they were very tough for us."

    Nightly Improvements on the Horizon

Looking ahead, Verstappen is hopeful that Red Bull can make the necessary adjustments overnight to improve their long-run performance. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda also showed promising pace before crashing out during the closing moments of FP2 after hitting the wall, a reminder of the challenges posed by the Jeddah circuit.

    Mclaren‘s Competitive Edge

The session also underscored McLaren’s strong start to the weekend, with Lando Norris posting a top time of 1:28.267, which was 0.28 seconds quicker than Verstappen’s best. The Dutchman acknowledged McLaren’s competitive edge, saying, "there’s still quite a bit of work to do and things to understand from our side."

    Conclusion

As the teams prepare for Saturday’s qualifying, all eyes will be on whether Red Bull can bridge the gap to their rivals and enhance their performance. Verstappen’s frank assessment indicates a mix of determination and caution as the championship titleholders work to regain their usual dominance.
