Why Lawson needs a reset to stop Red Bull’s loss becoming Racing Bulls’ loss

Why Lawson needs a reset to stop Red Bull’s loss becoming Racing Bulls’ loss

Liam Lawson’s Struggles Prompt Urgent Need for a Reset at Red Bull Racing

Liam Lawson’s challenging start to the 2025 Formula 1 season has prompted urgent discussions within the Red Bull Racing team. After four races where Lawson’s performance has been more disappointing than anticipated, questions arise about how to avoid a downward spiral that could label the team’s outing as a loss for the underperforming "Racing Bulls." With a potential reset on the horizon, the Kiwi driver must find a way to regain his foothold in F1.

    Why Lawson Needs a Reset

Lawson entered this season touted as a promising talent following his promotion to Red Bull after Sergio Perez’s departure. However, the reality has been starkly different. His performances have not only left fans and pundits disappointed but have also raised concerns about his adaptability in a competitive environment. As he tries to shake off the increasing pressure, a strategic reset may be essential to prevent his struggles from affecting the entire Racing Bulls team.

A Rocky Start: Assessing Lawson’s Performance

Liam Lawson’s opening races have been marred with inconsistency and a lack of pace. After making a splash in the races leading to his promotion, expectations were high. Yet, his foray into the 2025 season reveals a stark contrast, as his struggles seem amplified under the Red Bull spotlight.

    • Unfamiliar Territory: Lawson’s return to Formula 1 after a year with AlphaTauri was meant to be a triumph. Instead, he has encountered difficulties adapting to a more complex and powerful vehicle. The technical nuances of the RB21 have proven challenging, and Lawson’s struggles in Bahrain testify to this fact.

    • Lack of Points: While teammate Yuki Tsunoda has scored points and delivered strong performances, Lawson’s inability to do so raises concerns. In Bahrain, he failed to even progress past the first qualifying round, attributing his troubles to technical issues that only partially explain his poor performance.

    The Pressure Mounts

As Lawson faces mounting pressure both from within and outside the team, it seems a change of approach is crucial. An awareness of the need to reclaim former brilliance has apparently led to a desperate driving style that has seen him penalized multiple times. In his efforts to recover lost ground during races, including crashes involving race leaders, Lawson has exhibited signs of overexertion.

    Learning from Tsunoda’s Success

The stark contrast in performances between Lawson and Tsunoda cannot be ignored. Although Red Bull initially had reservations about Tsunoda, the Japanese driver has demonstrated resilience and skill that Lawson must aspire to replicate. As Lawson continues to flounder, the burden increases—not just for him, but for the entire Racing Bulls organisation, which relies on a steady points finish to maintain competitiveness.

The Path Forward: A Reset Strategy

Looking ahead, a reset may be the best course of action for Lawson. Head of Technical Operations, Tim Goss, previously hinted at needing a tailored approach for the new driver, which could involve revisiting basics and providing a safety net of sorts as Lawson rebuilds his confidence.

    • Adapting Mindset: Perhaps adopting a less aggressive driving style will allow Lawson to focus on precision over audacity. A return to the simpler setups may help ground him and reestablish a sense of control within the car.

    • Targeting the Saudi Arabian GP: With the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix looming, this race could serve as a critical benchmark for Lawson. A chance to redeem himself and put frustrations behind, success in Saudi Arabia could signify a turning point.

    Conclusion: A Defining Moment

The next few races are crucial for both Lawson and Red Bull Racing. If he can reset, deliver a strong performance, and recapture his earlier form, there is still hope for the season. Conversely, continued struggle may lead to an even more critical scrutiny of his position within the team. For now, both Lawson and Red Bull must focus on recalibrating and strategizing their way back into contention.
