Yuki Tsunoda Confident Ahead of Red Bull Challenge at Suzuka
Yuki Tsunoda, the new Red Bull driver, has expressed his determination to conquer the unique challenges posed by the team’s Formula 1 car as he prepares for his debut at the Japanese Grand Prix. The 23-year-old racer believes he can adapt his driving style to the distinctive characteristics of the RB21, following Liam Lawson’s struggles during his time in the cockpit.
Adapting to the RB21
Initially drafted into Red Bull’s main team from the Japanese GP, Tsunoda is keen to make a mark after impressing earlier in the season with Racing Bulls—albeit hindered by strategic blunders that cost him potential points. “Rather than it being an extremely difficult car, I felt that the set-up philosophy was completely different,” Tsunoda said, reflecting on his simulator experience with the RB21. “I had to slightly adjust my approach compared to how I usually set up the car.”
Characteristics of Red Bull Cars
Historically, Red Bull cars, known for their oversteering tendencies, have posed challenges for drivers, with previous teammates of Max Verstappen, including Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez, encountering difficulties. Despite this, Tsunoda remains optimistic. “People often say Red Bull cars tend to have strong front-end grip. I personally love cars that turn aggressively,” he explained. With experience in adapting his driving style, Tsunoda is ready to tackle the nuanced dynamics of his new machine.
Keeping Expectations in Check
Despite his confidence, Tsunoda is realistic about the adjustment process. “There’s no guarantee that I’ll be able to maximise my performance in this car just yet,” he admitted. “However, since it’s a top team, I believe that if I can extract the car’s full potential, the opportunities will come.”
Heading into his home race at Suzuka, Tsunoda’s immediate goal is clear: “The key will be how well I can understand the car and maximise its performance within the limited time of FP1. My goal is to reach Q3 and secure a top 10 finish.”
As the anticipation builds for the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix, all eyes will be on Tsunoda to see if he can deliver on his promise and become Japan’s first Formula 1 grand prix winner.
