Six people in hospital after huge fire at industrial estate in Cumbernauld, says Police Scotland | UK News

Six men have been treated in hospital after a huge fire broke out on an industrial estate in North Lanarkshire, Police Scotland has said.

The men are aged between 20 and 66 and none of their injuries are described as being life-threatening.

When fire crews arrived, a single-storey building on the Blairlinn industrial estate in Cumbernauld was “well alight” and black smoke was pouring from the unit.

Firefighters have been working to bring the blaze under control, according to Police Scotland, which added that “a number of neighbouring business properties have been evacuated”.

Emergency services “are likely to remain at the scene for some time” as the incident remains ongoing.

Sergeant Kevin Anderson said “the fire is contained to within the industrial premises”.

He asked people in the Greenfaulds area of the town to stay indoors and keep their windows closed as a precaution due to the smoke.

Six fire engines were sent to the industrial unit in Broomlee Road, Cumbernauld, northeast of Glasgow, on Tuesday afternoon, a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokesperson said.

Six ambulances, a trauma team, and a resuscitation unit were also sent to the scene.

The SFRS spokesperson said they were called to the fire at 2.35pm, and when two fire engines arrived, firefighters found a “single-storey building well alight”.

“A further four appliances were mobilised to the scene. Six casualties have been passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service, and firefighting crews remain in attendance.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said five people were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and one to University Hospital Monklands.

An investigation will be carried out in due course to establish the cause of the fire, Sergeant Anderson said.
