    Cliff notes

Newcastle United secured a historic 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final last night, ending a 70-year domestic trophy drought. Key highlights from the match include:

    • Dan Burn’s Opening Goal: Defender Dan Burn headed in Kieran Trippier’s corner just before half-time, giving Newcastle the lead.
    • Alexander Isak’s Contribution: Although Isak’s initial goal was disallowed for offside, he later successfully scored Newcastle’s second goal.
    • Federico Chiesa’s Late Goal: Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa scored in injury time, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
    • End of 70 years of hurt: Newcastle have won their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
    • Eddie Howe’s Achievement: Manager Eddie Howe became the first English manager in 17 years to win a major English trophy.

The i says “Geordie joy” as Toon ends a 70-year drought for silverware. The paper’s editorial says the win belongs to the ‘boyhood fan who refused to quit.’ The opinion piece suggests Dan Burn deserves the victory as much as anyone else.

The Guardian front page features an image of jubilant fans saying new legends were born last night and above all, it was just a “giant Newcastle party.” The paper says “The black-and-white-clad hordes had turned up wondering if it would finally be the day” after last winning a domestic trophy in 1955.

The Mirror says Newcastle’s history makers celebrated wildly after they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final to win their first major trophy since 1969. The paper says after climbing the Wembley steps to lift the trophy and then celebrating with it in front of their fans, Newcastle retreated to the dressing room to continue their festivities. In clips shared on social media, the squad can be seen singing and dancing together as they revel in their victory.

The Sun looks at how Newcastle’s win could mean 11 Premier League teams competing in Europe next season. The toons secured a place in the Europa Conference league on Sunday after their win at Wembley.

The Northern Echo says “It takes a lot to silence more than 30,000 euphoric Geordies, but as Newcastle United’s players walked up the steps to the royal box at Wembley yesterday, a hush descended across the national stadium.”
