Germany 2025 political race: Winner Friedrick Merz calls for independence from the United States
The Germany 2025 political race has been won. Conservative CDU party won the highly contested race and the party’s leader, Friedrich Merz is on course to become Germany’s next chancellor.
The CDU won comfortably, with 28.6% of the vote, while far-right party AfD came in second with a massive 20.8% and outgoing chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats got their worst-ever result, with 16%.
Merz has ruled out working with the AfD, but the huge gains will be a warning sign of what’s to come.
Friedrich Merz independence from US
Germany’s new leader, Friedrich Merz, has called on Europe to strengthen as the US has become “largely indifferent” to the continent’s fate and it must work to become independent of the United States.
Merz criticised US interference in the 2025 German Federal Election, after Donald Trump and his side-kick Elon Musk threw their support behind the far-right party AfD.
Merz told a roundtable TV discussion on Sunday night that his “absolute priority” would be to “strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that we can achieve real independence from the US step by step”.
