‘Riveting’ BBC drama starring British acting legend axed after just one season

A BBC drama critics said ‘was worth every minute of your time’ won’t be returning for a second season.

Directed by Philip Barantini, the 2021 film Boiling Point followed one chaotic night in a high-end London restaurant and was shot in a single take.

Praised as ‘gripping’ and ‘consistently captivating’ by critics, it was nominated for four Bafta Awards.

After the success of the film, the standalone sequel series of the same name was then released in 2023.

Set six months later, the series also featured much of the same cast and this time starred Vinette Robinson as Carly, head chef at Point North, who had taken over the top job from Andy, played by Stephen Graham.

Like the movie, the four-part series was also met with critical acclaim.

‘While the venue may have changed, the series has lost none of its high-octane energy in the kitchen, nor the stress and tension that oozes out of every order, leaving audiences feeling anxious … and hungry,’ Common Sense Media wrote in its review.

‘Riveting, heart-in-your-throat TV. The stakes, such as misshapen meringue or frozen meat, aren’t life-and-death but Boiling Point fires it up so it always feels like it could be,’ PerthNow shared.

‘Boiling Point the series is worth every stomach-clenching, nail-biting moment of your time,’ the Irish Independent added.

However, it’s now been reported there are no plans for the series to return.

‘It’s not often a drama gets such love from viewers and critics, but Boiling Point was such a rarity the team has been left disappointed that there’s no news on a second series,’ a source has told The Sun.

Despite this, there is a chance it could be revived down the line.

‘The fact is there’s still an appetite for more, it’s just making that happen. Boiling Point is on the shelf, so to speak, but if the right story or idea comes along then there’s every chance it could be back on screens one day,’ the source added.

Graham will next be seen in the Netflix crime drama Adolescence

The TV series, which also starred Hannah Walters, Izuka Hoyle and Áine Rose Daly, ended with Carly taking on a wedding booking to try and secure the restaurant’s finances.

Although there’s a chance Boiling Point won’t come back, Graham and Barantini have teamed up for another series already shaping up to be one of the stand-out releases of 2025.

Due to drop on Netflix next month, the four-part series Adolescence stars Graham as Eddie Miller, a father who faces the unthinkable when his 13-year-old son Jamie (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school.

Like Boiling Point, it’s also filmed in a continuous shot and unfolds in real time as those connected to the case try and figure out what happened to spark the shocking turn of events.

Metro has contacted the BBC for comment.

Boiling Point is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
