Lily Allen reflects on her ‘mean’ behaviour before checking into trauma centre
British pop icon Lily Allen recently labelled herself as ‘mean before she got sober’ before checking into a trauma clinic following the breakdown of her marriage with David Harbour.
Lily checked in to a US trauma clinic after reportedly being close to a
nervous breakdown.
The singer, 39, split from Stranger Things star David, 49, after she discovered he was allegedly using the celebrity dating app Raya in secret.
Before checking into the trauma clinic Allen and podcast co-host Miquita Oliver were interviewed by Grazia and talked about how they have put their party days behind them and focused on the bumpy journey to sobriety.
The Smile singer has been sober for five years now and has been very public about her past issues with drugs and alcohol.
Allen went on to say, ‘I think I’m just a completely different person. When I was drinking and taking drugs, I could be quite mean.’
‘I spent the best part of my twenties being publicly humiliated and vilified the whole time and sort of having to absorb all of that. And I think when I drank and when I took drugs, it was like, “Now it’s your turn.” I’m going to turn it around on everyone else.’
Lily has previously spoken out on how drug and alcohol abuse was always ‘on the cards’ as her family has a history of struggling with self-medicating.
Lily married David in 2020, and they raised a blended family together, as she has two daughters, Marnie, 12, and Ethel, 11, with her ex-husband Sam Cooper.
While she previously denied that she’s headed to ‘drug rehab’ amid divorce rumours, it has been claimed that Lily turned to an inpatient treatment facility as she is ‘spiralling and spiralling.’
After recently returning to Brooklyn, where she shares a home with David, the singer was reportedly extremely triggered by his proximity.
A source told MailOnline: ‘It was very painful for Lily to return home. David used to be her saviour, and now he’s a trigger for her.
‘Lily settled her kids back into the family home and took them to school for their new term, then flew herself straight to rehab.
‘She went a day earlier than intended as she felt wobbly and desperate to escape.’
The outlet reports that she will ‘spend several weeks at the residential retreat in the US’ and is expected to participate in group therapy as well as individual counselling sessions to help her process her grief.
Another source said the hitmaker ‘wants to make sure she’s feeling physically well again so she can be there for her daughters as the best mother she can be.’
‘Everyone thinks David is the steady one and Lily is the crazy headcase. But the reality is that Lily was calmer and more grounded than she’s ever been—until she discovered that her marriage was unexpectedly over,’ the mole added.
‘She is taking the responsible course of action with a trip to a retreat to get her head straight.’
Lily previously announced that she would be taking a three-week break from her BBC Sounds Miss Me? podcast with friend and co-presenter Miquita Oliver, as she tries to process her emotions.
