Champions League BVB defeats its away curse in Zagreb

Champions League BVB defeats its away curse in Zagreb

BVB hadn’t won away from home for more than two months until the Champions League game in Zagreb. The Croatians are making it easy for Dortmund to break this series. After the confident victory, the focus is on the top game in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Borussia Dortmund can still win away from home. BVB wins comfortably 3-0 at Dinamo Zagreb and has the best chance of qualifying directly for the round of 16 of the Champions League. Jamie Gittens, Ramy Bensebaini and Serhou Guirassy score an easy victory in Croatia. It is the first away win in more than two months. Nuri Sahin’s team recently suffered six defeats in a row in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the premier class.

“It’s nice that we won here. That’s very, very good. We are really happy,” said Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck. With twelve points from five games, BVB is in fourth place in the Champions League and is currently the best of the five German teams in the premier class. The victory in Zagreb was never in danger; the hosts presented themselves too staid, only having one shot on goal in 90 minutes.

“It was a relatively quiet game for us. We were very dominant with the ball and had a lot of control of the game. In contrast to the past away games,” said BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who is looking forward to the top game in the Bundesliga against FC Bayern next Saturday: “We are looking forward to Bayern, it will definitely be a tough fight.”

Ten points behind Bayern in the league

In the Champions League, BVB is three points ahead of Bayern, who climbed to 13th place in the table after the 1-0 win against Paris St. Germain. In the league, Dortmund are already ten points behind Munich – mainly because of their weakness away from home.

“We stayed patient, the boys held their positions well and we deserved to win. I’m glad we won here. Five games, twelve points – that’s impressive. “I’ll talk about the Bundesliga when the time comes, namely on Saturday,” said Sahin.
