New Girl fans have reason to celebrate as a cast reunion has given fresh hope for a future reboot.
The four male leads of the beloved sitcom got back together for a special walk down memory lane, and the conversation quickly turned to whether they could make viewers’ dreams come true.
It’s been a long six years since the audience has seen any newness and they have instead had to be content with the seven seasons created over seven years.
It is not just the OG lovers that want more, as the series has found a new fanbase in recent years.
New people discovered what happened when a schoolteacher called Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) moved into a loft with men she’d never met when the Fox show got put on Netflix in recent years. More people than ever now seemingly can’t get enough of the pranks, confusing drinking games, and will they/won’t they romances.
With a renewed interest in the shenanigans of Flat 4D, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Damon Wayans Jr., are very much open to returning to their characters – Nick Miller, Schmidt, Winston Bishop and Coach respectively. Their commitment to all being back in the same room to discuss their love of New Girl could be the biggest clue so far it could actually happen.
‘It’s one of those shows that’s taken on a life of its own, and I don’t think it’s going anywhere,’ Max, 45, said of the recent popularity, indicating there is an appetite for more.
Damon added to People, who reunited the men for their Sexiest Man Alive issue: ‘We had fun. It would be cool to reprise the characters.’
His co-stars then gently ribbed him for his choice of word ‘reprise’, showing that their onscreen chemistry is a reflection of their real-world relationships.
The foursome went on to share that after spending so long together playing the characters, they often fall back into them when around each other. The special dynamic has led to a long-running bit between Lamorne, 41, and Jake, 46, who blame each other for the lack of new episodes.
‘You want the facts? Lamorne won’t do after his Emmy,’ Jake said through laughter. Lamorne impressively won the accolade for Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie after playing Deputy Witt Farr in Fargo. ‘Couple more commas, few more zeros. We in business,’ Larmorne joked in response.
Finally putting their banter aside, Jake gave the truth: ‘I think we all would if the right thing came. It would be fun to be together.’
However, despite their willingness, it is up to creator Elizabeth Meriwether. If she is keen then they full faith in her ability to make it work.
‘Liz is very funny and if she did bring it back, it would be great,’ said Damon, 41. ‘She would have a smart take on it,’ agreed Jake.
While there are no official plans for a reboot, fans are enthusiastic about the possibility.
Taking to the comment section on YouTube, mysticalangel192 wrote: ‘I need a new girl revival series like YESTERDAY.’
Heidiwilltowin echoed the sentiment and said: ‘Miss this show. New Girl was to Millennials what Friends was to Gen X. (And we absolutely needed more seasons/episodes).’
‘Nostalgia. The show was so good! I miss it and would definitely watch a reunion!’ agreed KisforKim1.
Ravenps4857 has some trepidations: ‘Part of me wants more of this show but at the same time, this show had the most satisfying series finale.’
Luckily, Zooey, 44, has also shown enthusiasm for getting the gang back together.
She previously told The Wall Street Journal: ‘I definitely had a wonderful time and would be very happy to revisit.’
Meanwhile, Hannah Simone, who played Jess’ bestie Cece Parkeh, told Metro: ‘I’m up for anything to do with this show always, because I love every single person that was part of that show, the cast, the creators, the writers. I’m down to do whatever.’
Netflix previously brought back Gilmore Girls for a special mini-series after seeing the yearning for newness years after it finished, so perhaps the same could be done for New Girl…
