‘Trump triumphantly elected’
Much like the UK, the newspaper front pages went to print long before the results of the US election rolled in. Some of the front pages reported on the predictions of the election whilst others left US politics off their front pages altogether. Online, most major European newspapers/news sites lead with the presidential election – here are some of the highlights.
Trump triumphantly elected President of the United States
Republican Donald Trump has won the US presidential election against Democrat Kamala Harris, US media reported, marking an extraordinary return to power. The 78-year-old former president succeeded in his gamble to return to the White House at the end of an excessively eventful campaign, particularly aggressive and indecisive until the last minute.
The world hanging on the choice of Americans
Rarely have the visions of two presidential candidates been so different. Kamala Harris’s program is diametrically opposed to that of Donald Trump on abortion, climate, design of government … But the Democrat’s refocusing has also led her to curiously move closer to some of her populist rival’s positions on immigration issues or policy towards China … Overall, however, the two candidates have remained vague about their projects, contenting themselves with giving broad directions.
European leaders congratulate Trump as Harris’s comeback looks unlikely
Reactions from across the Atlantic poured in on Wednesday morning as Donald Trump took to the stage in Florida to claim election victory after securing almost enough electoral votes to beat his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was the first to congratulate Trump on “the biggest comeback in US political history,” calling it “a much-needed victory for the world” in a post on X.
