Countdown’s Carol Vorderman berated for not knowing numbers

Carol Vorderman has been slammed by her son after spoiling a game show they were appearing on.

The TV and radio presenter, 63, began her media career on the Channel 4 game show Countdown, appearing with Richard Whiteley from 1982 until his death in 2005, and subsequently with Des Lynam and Des O’Connor, before leaving in 2008.

The series’ involved word and mathematical tasks, however Carol appeared to forget how the format of quizzes and how they work this week.

One of the guests on Romesh Ranganathan’s new quiz show, Parents’ Evening, she paired up with her son Cameron, while Alison Hammond appeared with her son Aidan and Iain Stirling and his mum Alison.

The panel show sees three famous faces team up with their sons, daughters, mums or dads, with their family members then having to determine how many answers to questions their loved one might know.

In one round on social media the teams were asked to consider how many Facebook relationship status’ they could list.

‘Well, I don’t do Facebook! I mean, how many relationship status’ can you actually have? You’ve got married, single…’ she began before a buzzer went off and a woman in the audience could be heard yelling out.

‘Wow, wow, wow ok! Carol the point of the game is not to suddenly just shouting out the answers. I am very sorry, but we are having to deduct £200 from your total and removing those answers from the round.’

After Carol seemed confused, she asked: ‘Wait you’re deducting money? We won’t have any left!’

Her son then quipped: ‘Yea mum, that’s how numbers work.’

His response saw the audience erupt in claps, with Carol then challenging her son to still attempt to answer another 5 status’.

Alison Hammond, then sat back, smartly sat them out of the round and said: ‘I think Carol’s got this.’

‘No. I’m out,’ Iain’ mum Alison declared, leaving the challenge in Cameron’s court.

‘Carol you just played an absolute blinder,’ Romesh joked.

Despite his best efforts Cameron, who admitted he wasn’t confident about the challenge, didn’t make it through with enough correct answers.

Watching it play out, some viewers were left scratching their heads at Carol’s slip up.

‘Carol isn’t the best at listening on this show, is she?’ Owen posted on X.

‘NOOOOOO. Carol, what are you doing???’ Joseph shared.

The episode was eventually won by Alison and Aidan.

Last month Carol announced she stepped down from her LBC radio show after suffering from burnout.

Explaining how working seven-day weeks ‘for as long as I can remember’ resulted in her being hospitalised, Carol explained that while scans revealed she had no underlying health issues, she took it as a ‘warning sign’ to slow down.

She has now cut back her working hours to just weekdays.

Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening continues next Saturday at 9.05pm on ITV1.
