The Independent – PM’s vow to revive UK – as he dismisses ‘silly’ freebies stories

    September 24, 2024

The Independent says Keir Starmer will deliver a speech to reboot his government and inject hope, and attempt to move beyond the scandals about gifts, the internal squabbles and the accusations of being doom-laden.

The front page features an image of Chancellor Rachel Reeves – who delivered her conference speech yesterday and was interrupted by a pro-Gaza heckler.

Keir Starmer promises to revive UK as he dismisses ‘silly’ freebies stories

Sir Keir Starmer will tell an “exhausted Britain” that the tough decisions he is taking for the short term are the first steps towards national renewal and higher living standards.

The prime minister will give one of the most important speeches of his political career on Tuesday as he addresses Labour delegates at the party conference in Liverpool.

It comes as sources close to him admit he urgently needs to project a longer-term vision of hope and optimism after a first 10 weeks in power characterised by gloom and despair over the state of the finances and problems facing the country.

The prime minister is understood to blame the summer riots for preventing him from having enough time to properly consider his long-term vision in the immediate wake of the election.

Protester grabbed by neck and thrown out of Labour conference during Rachel Reeves speech

A protester who heckled Rachel Reeves during her Labour Party conference speech was grabbed by the neck and hauled out of the venue on Monday, 23 September.

The heckler shouted about the sale of arms to Israel before security removed him from the hall.

“I thought we were voting for change Rachel, climate breakdown is on our doorstep,” the protester shouted as delegates drowned out his words.

Ms Reeves responded that Labour “represents working people, not a party of protest.”

Light at the end of this tunnel” – Tuesday’s front pages continue their coverage of the Labour Party conference taking place this week, the first party conference in power in more than 15 years.

Some newspapers cover Rachel Reeves’s speech yesterday, as the chancellor promised no return to austerity and laid out a more optimistic view of the UK economy. Many newspapers look ahead to the speech by PM Sir Keir Starmer, who will speak at the conference in Liverpool today.
