Daily Mirror – Race hate surge in school

    September 2, 2024

As the new academic year begins, campaigners are calling for action as the number of racist incidents in schools rose last year.

The Daily Mirror reports that “almost 60 children a day were suspended from school for racism last year”. It adds that means the number of race hate incidents among pupils rose by a quarter in 12 months.

Elsewhere, the front page reports on Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Man Utd.

Racism in schools surges with SIXTY children as young as age four sent home every day

Thousands of children, some as young as four, were sent home from school for racism last year.

Campaigners called for urgent action to stem the tide of hatred in our classrooms, amid fears bigotry has become “normalised”.

They say impressionable youngsters are repeating in the classroom what they hear from their parents and right-wing figures in the media. In total, 11,619 children were suspended for racist behaviour in 2023 – up 25% on the previous 12 months, and equivalent to almost 60 suspensions a day.

Shockingly, 1,413 were still at primary school, with seven incidents logged against kids as young as four.

Bruno Fernandes makes feelings clear on Casemiro after embarrassing Liverpool performance

Bruno Fernandes claimed there was no need to “make it individual” as he addressed Casemiro ‘s blunders which led to Manchester United’s embarrassing defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

The Red Devils were comprehensively beaten by their arch rivals as they suffered back-to-back defeats to leave Erik ten Hag facing questions after just three games of the season. United contributed to their own downfall as Liverpool scored twice in the first half.

Both goals owed to Casemiro errors with the Brazilian first making a misplaced pass in his own half before he tried to dribble up the pitch, only to be dispossessed by Luiz Diaz in a dangerous error – allowing the Reds forward to score his second of the game.

Casemiro was tipped to leave Manchester in the summer after a poor second season, but retains the faith of other senior figures in the dressing room as captain Fernandes refused to blame him personally for the team’s failure on Sunday.
