Alzheimer’s heartache for millions as wonder drug rejected for NHS use

Hopes of a an Alzheimer’s treatment revolution have been dashed for millions of people after the medicines watchdog ruled a breakthrough drug was too expensive for use on the NHS. Lecanemab is the world’s first drug proven to slow the disease’s progression, with trials showing it slowed cognitive decline by 27 percent over 18 months.

It was this morning given the green light by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which decides whether medicines are safe for use.

But within minutes, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence announced it would not recommend its use on the NHS as the benefits are “too small to justify the costs”.

Jermaine Jenas’ ex-model wife ‘standing by him’ after he was sacked by BBC over texts

Jermaine Jenas’ wife is said to be “standing by him” as several women have reportedly come forward with accusations of “inappropriate behaviour” from him. The 41-year-old former footballer and presenter, known for hosting Match of the Day and The One Show, was sacked by the BBC following these allegations on Thursday.

The BBC allegedly received a complaint about text messages sent by him last month and began an investigation. Claims suggest that after one woman complained about receiving unsolicited messages, other female staff members also came forward.

He is understood to have told his wife of 13 years, Ellie Penfold, about the claims, which he is said to be “deeply unhappy” about. According to reports, she is understood to be standing by him.

An insider told the press that the BBC acted “swiftly and decisively”. They said: “The first complaint was raised after Jermaine flirtily messaged a female member of staff on The One Show, and she raised her misgivings in a formal capacity.

Today’s news summary – Paper Talk

If you are someone who reads every perspective of a story, here is a news summary of all of today’s front pages from today’s newspapers; summarised in a 2-minute read

‘Alzheimer’s drug blocked on NHS’ & ‘Jermaine Jenas sacked by BBC’ - Paper Talk

    Editorial 23 August 2024.

A new Alzheimer’s drug has been “blocked for use on NHS” and the BBC has sacked one of its presenters – these are the top stories on Friday’s front pages.

The papers react to news that the new drug will not be available on the NHS due to costs with most papers reacting with shock and outrage. The drug was deemed efficient at slowing Alzheimer’s disease.

News that the BBC has sacked presenter Jermaine Jenas after complaints were made over ‘inappropriate behaviour’ makes the front page of the tabloids – and a common sidebar article for the broadsheets.

Elsewhere, several of the papers lead on other domestic topics including ongoing discussions around the recent GCSE results, ongoing disputes over public sector pay, Britain’s overcrowded prisons and other issues facing the government.
