Suspected serial killer in Kenya escapes from police station

A suspected serial killer accused of murdering and dismembering 42 women has escaped from a Nairobi police station, sparking a manhunt and prompting the arrest of eight police officers.

Collins Jumaisi, 33, who was arrested last month following the gruesome discovery of mutilated bodies in a Nairobi slum, managed to break free from the police cell along with 12 other prisoners. The escapees reportedly cut through a wire mesh roof at the police station.

According to authorities, preliminary investigations suggest that the escape was aided by insiders. Eight police officers who were on duty at the time have been suspended and are being held in custody. The matter is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit.

The breakout was discovered during a routine morning check of the cells. Police found that 13 prisoners, 12 of which were Eritrean nationals,  had escaped by cutting the wire mesh in the basking bay of the police station.

The incident occurred at a police station in the upscale Gigiri district of Nairobi, which is home to the United Nations regional headquarters and several embassies.
