Daily Express – Tories united in support of winter fuel crusade
The Daily Express reports all the candidates to be the next Tory leader want the government to U-turn on scrapping the winter fuel payment. “It means that whoever replaces Rishi Sunak in October, the Conservative Party is guaranteed to be led by someone dedicated to fighting against Labour’s pensioner policy every step of the way,” the paper says.
Elsewhere, the front page reports “Repeat abusers of women should be “stopped in their tracks” through quick arrests and sentencing like rioters, a former victims commissioner has demanded.”
All six Tory leadership candidates unite behind Express Winter Fuel campaign
All six Conservative leadership candidates have put their differences to one side and backed the Express’ campaign to demand Rachel Reeves u-turn on her cruel Winter Fuel policy.
Amid the ongoing race to win the Tory crown, Tom Tugendhat, James Cleverly, Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, Mel Stride and Priti Patel have all united behind the growing demand for the Government to abandon its callous attack on pensioners.
The six contenders join dozens of MPs from across the political spectrum who have already backed the Save Winter Fuel Payments campaign.
The significant development comes as Labour is warned that snatching the vital lifeline could spectacularly backfire and create a huge unintended benefits bill.
Abusers of women should be stopped with quick justice like rioters, campaigners demand
Repeat abusers of women should be “stopped in their tracks” through quick arrests and sentencing like rioters, a former victims commissioner has demanded.
Dame Vera Baird suggested male violence against women and girls (MVAWG) should be put on the same footing as the riots.
Writing in the Express, she said: “MVAWG is almost always criminal and it is poorly and slowly dealt with by police and the wider criminal justice system which therefore offers no deterrent.
“I have called for some cases of MVAWG, already in the system, and log jammed in the massive Crown Court queue left by the last Government, to be speeded through, as the riot charges were.
“As racist demonstrators were stopped in their tracks by quick arrests and speedy sentencing, misogynistic serial abusers of women should face a similar determined demonstration that MVAWG will bring them to severe penal consequences.”
