Daily Express – Don’t blame UK’s finances for not fixing pension injustice
The Daily Express reports on a long-running dispute over pensions affecting tens of thousands of married women. The paper says tens of thousands of married women pensioners “missed out on payments” from the state and are yet to receive compensation. Campaigners say it would be “outrageous” to deny them compensation.
At the top of the Daily Express, there is a report on a possible evacuation plan to get British nationals from Israel back to the UK.
Ministers warned against making ‘outrageous’ £1billion state pension betrayal
Victims of a £1billion state pension injustice must be compensated, ministers have been warned.
It would be “outrageous” if stretched public finances were used as an excuse to deny them payments.
Tens of thousands of married women were affected and many are still to receive any compensation from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Former pensions minister Sir Steve Webb, a partner at consultants LCP, said: “I have been campaigning for the women affected for many years, and a number of complaints are currently still working their way through the system.
Foreign Office drawing up evacuation plans as Iran tells UK retaliation is a ‘right’
The Foreign Office is drawing up emergency plans to evacuate Britons from the Middle East if a regional war breaks out.
In comments likely to alarm diplomats, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer it has a “right” to attack Israel over the assassination of the Hamas leader in Tehran.
And UK officials are weighing up whether they will have to evacuate thousands of Britons from the region if war breaks out, the i reported.
Embassy teams have been bolstered to assist with emergency plans and Border Force teams have also been sent to the region – as they were during the evacuation of Sudan and Afghanistan.
More than 1,000 UK military personnel have already been put on standby to possibly get Britons out of Israel and Lebanon, defence sources suggested.
