    Media Coverage

The story continues to dominate the news cycle – in print and online – as the night of chaos expected to sweep the UK was met with peaceful anti-racism protesting and the planned 100 far-right riots had failed to materialise.

The front pages look at those already sentenced to prison for their role in the shameful scenes this week – the quick arrests and sentencing along with more police officers is likely why further far-right violence failed to happen last night.

The country will continue to hold its breath and hope this now brings an end to the shameful scenes across the country much of it fuelled by misinformation online over the suspect in the triple murder of three young girls in Liverpool.

Trending – Tens of thousands take to the streets to counter racist riots

After a week of far-right rioting across England and Northern Ireland, last night marked a moment of hope and peace for the UK. The country held its breath after reports that more than 100 far-right demonstrations were set to take place in anti-immigration and anti-Muslim protests. But tens of thousands of anti-racism protesters took to the streets, forming protective rings around immigration centres and peacefully marching through the streets. For the few far-right protesters who did turn out, they quickly dispersed and the night of violence the country had prepared for failed to materialise.

For much of the last 7 days, England and Northern Ireland have seen shameful scenes of violence leaving families afraid to leave their homes after far-right thugs attacked Muslims and non-white people, set buildings and cars on fire, attacked police officers and looted shops.

It comes a week after three children were murdered. The suspect was born in Wales to Nigerian parents. He has no known links to Islam and is believed to be from a Christian background. Misinformation spread fast online, with reports saying he was an illegal immigrant and a Muslim – leading to riots and attacks on Muslim communities.

Yesterday’s front pages largely reported on what was expected to be a night of chaos, but Thursday’s front pages celebrate a ‘United Britain’ standing up to thugs and racism. Even traditional right-wing newspapers – many of which have been accused of fanning the flames of division in the UK – celebrated the anti-hate protesters. ‘Standing together’ ‘Power to the people’ and ‘anti-hate marchers face down thugs’ are just a few of the headlines.

Many across the country will now be hoping the far-right violence has come to a close – several of the papers lead on those who have already been sentenced to prison for their role in the week’s violence, including people getting three-year sentences.

    UK front pages

A look at how the UK newspapers covered last night’s events. The country had braced for more than 100 far-right riots but in the end, it failed to happen and instead, tens of thousands of peaceful anti-racism and anti-hate protests took place, hopefully bringing and end to this shameful week that has taken attention away from the three little girls murdered, and instead caused more violence and fear in the country.

    How social media is reacting

    So proud of Peterborough today.

Our local community came out in numbers in an anti racism/ anti fascism unified counter demonstration.

Peaceful, calm and felt very comfortable to be there and get home safely.

    Well done everyone.

I’m so proud to be Brummie. A local refugee charity was on the hit list for a fascist ‘demo’ last night. Bullies picking on the most vulnerable. Hundreds turned up to show that we would not leave them isolated in the face of threats, and that it is racists who are not welcome.… pic.twitter.com/7fwlx6FYI5

    Are you watching @elonmusk?

Do you understand the significance of these two particular papers standing with these huge crowds and overwhelming UK public opinion…

…and against you & your bot army incitement of thugs to a “civil war”?

Liverpool, Walthamstow, Oxford, Bristol – beautiful scenes from up and down the country of communities coming together in the face of hatred this evening.
