The Independent – Musk steps up war of words with Starmer
The Independent front page reports ‘in a series of posts to his social media platform, X, Musk repeatedly suggested that communities in the UK are treated differently under the law’. A large image of Sky Brown – Team GB skateboarder – features on the front page. The paper says she ‘fell in qualifying and felt her shoulder dislodge again, but she pieced herself back together with the help of Team GB’s physios to win a second Olympic medal at 16 years old.’ At the top of the paper, there is a report on Kamala Harris – who officially picked her running mate.
Elon Musk launches Twitter tirade over far-right riots as minister brands billionaire ‘deeply irresponsible’
Elon Musk has launched another Twitter tirade about the UK’s handling of crime after he was accused of being “deeply irresponsible” by a government minister.
Posting on his social media platform on Tuesday afternoon, he repeatedly implied that communities are treated differently under the law under so-called ‘two-tier policing’.
In one of his posts, Musk shared a video from US right-wing influencer, Andy Ngo, showing a group of men wearing balaclavas, with some waving Palestinian flags. The caption claimed “armed ‘Muslim patrol’ members surrounded and attacked a pub after marching around the area looking for white right-wingers to attack.”
The story behind Sky Brown’s miraculous Olympic bronze – hours after her shoulder ‘popped out’
Sky Brown is an Olympic medallist again, and this time she did it the hard way. She was in hospital the day she arrived at these Olympic Games, getting an MRI scan on her dislocated shoulder. Then, in qualifying here in the searing Parisian heat on Tuesday, the bone briefly popped out of its socket again when she fell.
“I ran down to her and she said, ‘Daddy, it’s come out’,” said her father, Stuart Brown, who is by her side at every competition. “As we were getting out she said, ‘I think it’s gone back in’. She didn’t want to show [pain] because she was so afraid of being pulled out of the contest [by competition doctors].”
Kamala Harris selects Minnesota governor Tim Walz to be her running mate
Vice-president Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota governor Tim Walz to be her running mate, touting the work he’s done for middle-class families and his “deep commitment” to his own wife and children.
“One of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle-class families run deep. It’s personal,” she wrote in an Instagram post announcing the decision. “He worked with Republicans to pass infrastructure investments. He cut taxes for working families. He passed a law to provide paid family and medical leave to Minnesotan families.”
She added: “We are going to build a great partnership. We are going to build a great team. We are going to win this election.”
