Daily Mirror – Jail warning to rioters: 10 years hard labour

    August 7, 2024

The Daily Mirror reports that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has warned rioters could face up to 10 years in prison. The paper reports on the riots which spread to Plymouth on Monday night – its main image shows Devon and Cornwall Police officers making one of many arrests as disorder erupted in the city. The picture is nestled next to the headline “10 years hard labour” – which stems from a warning from the government which has pledged to get tough ahead of fresh fears of more violence. Yvette Cooper is pictured at the bottom after she branded those involved as “cowardly thugs”.

A large image of Team GB’s athletes – shining at the Olympics – along with a tagline saying ‘our flag doesn’t belong to far-right yobs’. It says it belongs to the ‘millions of decent people in the country, our athletes … and to the very best of us.’

Mindless UK riot thugs face prison for up to 10 years in Government crackdown

The Government has warned rioters could be locked up for up to 10 years as police forces brace for a fresh wave of violence.

Justice Minister Heidi Alexander said thugs taking part in disorder have “a prison place waiting for them” and could face the maximum 10 year sentence for rioting.

More than 400 suspects have now been arrested in the wake of violence around the country. Officers are ready for further disorder across the country as they prepare for at least 30 potential gatherings on Wednesday, police sources said.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told the Mirror: “These cowardly thugs have set about on a campaign of violence, intimidation and fear and they will be stopped. It is not protest. It is violent, criminal disorder.

‘How dare yobs carry our flag and claim to be patriots…what a contrast to our Olympians’

In towns and cities across the country can be found the smouldering scars of more than a week of violence and disorder.

Far-right hooligans have terrorised communities, whipped up hatred where there was harmony and destroyed buildings, shops and libraries. And they have claimed to do so in the name of patriotism.

The real patriots, the people who truly represent this country, can be found at the Paris Olympics. Whereas the thugs seek only to divide people, the Team GB athletes seek only to bring them together.

Our Olympic heroes and heroines are proud to come from diverse backgrounds, they are proud to be standard bearers for inclusivity and they are proud to fly the flag for Britain.

‘40 riots expected today as criminals face terrorism charges’ - Paper Talk

    Editorial 07 August 2024.

Wednesday’s front pages continue their coverage of the ongoing riots across towns and cities in England and Northern Ireland. Police are preparing for another day of disorder on Wednesday after an online list of places to target – hotels housing immigrants and immigration centres – leaked online. Extra police have been deployed to protect the country following the destruction of businesses, buildings, and cars as well as looting from the rioters.

Many of the newspapers also report on those arrested suggesting ‘judgement day is here’. The front pages say the rioters are starting to face court now and could be charged with domestic terrorism.

The front pages also feature pictures of the latest action from Paris 2024 – with Team GB’s medal success dominant. The back pages continue the coverage.
