The Independent – Starmer’s mission to rebuild Britain – and closer ties with the EU
The Independent’s front page reports the King’s Speech sets out Labour flagship policies to fast-track housebuilding, nationalise railways and ‘modernise’ the asylum system – as the PM prepares to host other leaders and ‘reset and renew’ our relationship with Europe.
Charles and Camilla are pictured on the front page – as the King gave his speech. A report on Strictly Come Dancing – and the scandal it’s facing, as well as a topper headline reporting on heat alerts being issued across the UK for the week as it’s set to heat up.
Starmer’s ‘generational’ plan to rebuild UK and forge closer ties with EU
Sir Keir Starmer will “fire the starting gun” on Britain’s new relationship with the EU on Thursday as he hosts fellow European leaders after reshaping the country’s destiny with Labour’s King’s Speech.
The new prime minister ushered in a generational shift in British political priorities with a programme for government focused on the needs of “generation rent” voters aged under-45, as opposed to older voters who largely backed Brexit.
Ahead of the general election, Sir Keir campaigned on a promise to “change the country” just as he changed Labour after Jeremy Corbyn. On Wednesday he set out an agenda that includes plans to break the deadlock on affordable housing, protections for renters and the restoration of workplace rights.
Strictly Come Dancing isn’t the problem – men are
Strictly Come Dancing, once famous for its ballroom bling and raunchy rumbas, is now mired in a deepening abuse scandal.
After professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima were alleged to have mistreated celebrity partners during training, a third Strictly pro – who is no longer part of the show – has been named as “a person of interest” in the BBC investigation.
The identity of the third star has not been revealed, but according to initial reports: “A professional’s name has come up, alongside Giovanni and Graziano. He is no longer part of the show but he has been named as a person of interest. Conversations are ongoing and there are more people who need to be spoken to.”
Heat health alerts issued as temperatures near 30C
Yellow heat health alerts have been issued as temperatures look set to reach around 30C.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) alerts cover East Midlands, East England, London and the South East from Thursday to Saturday.
It warns that expected hot weather may have minor impacts on the health and social care sector.
The Met Office said temperatures of “around 30C are possible in the South East” and that figures in the mid to upper twenties are “more likely in places” across England and Wales.
