Wes Streeting pledges billions to GPs in order to ‘fix front door’ of NHS
Ministers will divert billions of pounds from hospitals to GPs to “fix the front door to the NHS”, Wes Streeting has promised as he said millions of patients will be able to see the same family doctor at every appointment.
The health secretary made his first major policy announcement as he prepared to begin vital talks with junior doctors on Tuesday, aimed at finally ending the strikes that have crippled the health service since 2022.
Less than 10% of the £165bn NHS budget in England is spent on primary care, and that share has been falling, despite record high demand at GP surgeries. In a significant policy shift, Streeting on Monday said he would reverse that trend and boost the proportion of the budget for primary care so patients could access help sooner.
Kyiv children’s hospital likely took direct hit from Russian missile, UN says
A deadly strike on Kyiv’s Ohmatdyt children’s hospital – Ukraine’s biggest paediatrics facility – was likely caused by a direct hit from a Russian missile, the head of the UN’s human rights monitoring mission said.
Danielle Bell, head of mission for the UN human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine, said: “Analysis of the video footage and an assessment made at the incident site indicates a high likelihood that the children’s hospital suffered a direct hit rather than receiving damage due to an intercepted weapon system.”
She said her team, who visited the site on Monday, could not make a final determination but that the missile appeared to have been launched by the Russian Federation.
Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said earlier today that it was a Nasams surface-to-air missile launched by Ukraine that hit the children’s hospital in Kyiv on Monday. Ukrainian authorities said that Russia struck the hospital with a Kh-101 Kalibr missile.

The right-leaning newspapers claim the new chancellor – Rachel Reeves – is laying the groundwork for tax hikes following her first speech as Chancellor in which she said Labour had inherited the worst economy since WW2. The publications argue the economy the Tories inherited from the last Labour government – in 2010 – was far worse than today’s situation.
Elsewhere, England’s upcoming Euros semi-finals make several tabloid front pages – and not surprisingly, dominates the back pages.
