    Metro – A hero’s send off

    July 8, 2024

The Metro leads on the funeral of Rob Burrow – the rugby league legend who died at the age of 41. His parents revealed the star died ‘very peacefully’ in hospital while surrounded by his family following his battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Hundreds of people lined the streets to say farewell to the star. Elsewhere, the front page also features an image of Prince William attending the England vs Switzerland – the Three Lions won on penalties in the end.

Rugby legend Rob Burrow remembered at Challenge Cup final

Tributes were paid to rugby legend Rob Burrow ahead of Saturday’s Challenge Cup final at Wembley. Former Leeds Rhinos and England star Burrow died at the age 41 last Sunday after a four-and-a-half year battle with motor neurone disease.

He dedicated the last few years of his life to raising awareness of the disease and helped raise millions for charity. The Prince of Wales was among those to pay tribute to Burrow upon his passing while many laid flowers outside of the Rhinos’ home ground Headingley and again at Wembley on Saturday in front of the Rugby League Legends statue.

Prince William fist pumps as he celebrates England’s ‘nail-biting’ Euros shootout win

Prince William went through it just like the rest of us watching England once again leave it late, eventually seeing off Switzerland on penalties to reach the Euro 2024 semi-finals.

The Prince of Wales showed a range of emotions at the Dusseldorf Arena as he cheered on Gareth Southgate’s men. William, who is president of the FA, was seen out of his seat and punching the air after England equalised in the 80th minute, around five minutes after Switzerland scored the first goal.

He could also be seen with his head in his hands as the game finished 1-1 after extra-time, before getting back to his feet to celebrate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s winning spot-kick.

Lewis Hamilton fights back tears after ending three-year wait for a win at British Grand Prix

Sir Lewis Hamilton finally ended his near-three-year winless streak on Sunday to claim a stunning victory at the British Grand Prix.

The seven-time Formula One champion strategically overtook Lando Norris before holding off a late charge from Max Verstappen to win at Silverstone, his first win since Saudi Arabia in December 2021.

Home fans were thrilled on Saturday, with the three Brits George Russell, Hamilton and Norris qualifying in the top three, but with dark clouds looming a chaotic race was on the cards.

‘Rachel Reeves unveils Labour plans’ & ‘Shock French election results’ - Paper Talk

    Editorial 08 July 2024.

It’s politics galore on the front pages of Monday’s newspapers, with many looking ahead at what Rachel Reeves is expected to say in her first speech as chancellor. Reeves is the UK’s first woman chancellor of the exchequer.

French politics is also splashed on many papers, as the left-wing bloc won a shocking victory in the second and final parliamentary election on Sunday. France now faces a political deadlock after Sunday’s election dealt a blow to the far-right National Rally – but left no party with a majority.

As Europe’s summer of sports is in full swing, the front pages offer their analysis of Wimbledon, the Euros and the British Grand Prix. The coverage is continued via the back pages.
