France election: surprise win for leftwing alliance keeps Le Pen’s far right from power

A leftwing alliance has become the biggest force in the French parliament after tactical voting held back the far right, but the shape of the future government remained uncertain after no group won an absolute majority.

The surprise result for the leftwing New Popular Front – which won 182 seats, followed by president Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Together alliance on 163 and the far right in third with 143 seats – showed the strength of tactical voting against Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN). The far right and its allies had forged a commanding lead in the first round but were ultimately held back by massive tactical voting to prevent them winning enough seats to form a government.

Lewis Hamilton feared he would not win again as he ends victory drought

Lewis Hamilton has admitted that he feared he might never win again and suffered mental health issues as he endured over two years without a Formula One win, ending the drought at the British Grand Prix.

Hamilton won a gripping race at Silverstone, his first victory since Saudi Arabia in 2021, a two-year period during which his Mercedes team have struggled to challenge, and the 39-year-old was in tears after crossing the line as the import of the achievement hit home.

    Editorial 08 July 2024.

It’s politics galore on the front pages of Monday’s newspapers, with many looking ahead at what Rachel Reeves is expected to say in her first speech as chancellor. Reeves is the UK’s first woman chancellor of the exchequer.

French politics is also splashed on many papers, as the left-wing bloc won a shocking victory in the second and final parliamentary election on Sunday. France now faces a political deadlock after Sunday’s election dealt a blow to the far-right National Rally – but left no party with a majority.

As Europe’s summer of sports is in full swing, the front pages offer their analysis of Wimbledon, the Euros and the British Grand Prix. The coverage is continued via the back pages.
