Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry has slammed the BBC over their on-air joke about Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty miss at Euro 2024.
Ronaldo was in tears after his penalty was saved by Jan Oblak in the first half of extra time in Portugal’s last-16 tie against Slovenia on Monday evening.
The 39-year-old was crying alongside his Portugal teammates in the half-time huddle and was then consoled by Diogo Dalot as he made his way back onto the pitch for the second half of extra time.
During their analysis of Ronaldo’s penalty miss, the BBC captioned the incident as: ‘Misstiano Penaldo’.
And that decision irked Terry, who branded the caption as a ‘disgrace’.
The former Chelsea and England captain posted a photo of the caption on his Instagram story alongside the message: ‘BBC this is a disgrace!’
After the game went to a penalty shootout, Slovenia saw all three of their spot kicks saved by Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Ronaldo stepped up to take Portugal’s first penalty and he managed to beat Oblak with his second attempt in the opposite corner.
Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva then scored their penalties to win the shootout for Portugal, who now play France in the Euro 2024 quarter-final on Friday at 8pm.
