Hungary’s Varga stable after going off on stretcher

Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is stable in hospital following a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during Sunday’s Euro 2024 match. Varga sustained a fractured cheekbone and will undergo surgery, as confirmed by Hungary manager Marco Rossi.

“Varga is okay,” said Rossi, adding that although Varga will be operated on, he is healthy and not at any risk. “Unfortunately he will be operated on because he suffered a fracture. We will see [what happens]. If we progress in the tournament for sure he will not be with us.”

The match was delayed for nearly seven minutes as Varga received treatment on the pitch. The Hungarian Football Federation posted on social media that Varga is currently in a Stuttgart hospital and promised updates on his condition.

During the incident, Hungary’s players quickly signalled for medical help, with teammates assisting in bringing on the stretcher. Sheets were held around Varga as he was treated and then taken to the hospital.

Rossi said the players were “worried” about Varga’s condition.

He added: “What I heard from the players is that he looked like he was not conscious so everybody was really worried about his condition and also worried about the fact the doctors arrived a bit late, but probably they didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.”
