Disruption on London Euston routes as trains cancelled and delayed | UK News

Passengers were hit by rush hour travel chaos after a train line into London Euston was closed after a chemical spillage.

Trains into London Euston were cancelled or delayed today during peak rush hour travel due to a chemical spillage near Crewe.

Major disruption lasted until noon after a safety inspection near Crewe shut the tracks shortly before 6am.

The inspection of a track in Crewe blocked all lines on the route, National Rail warned.

London Northwestern Railway told passengers the tracks were shut ‘due to a chemical spillage.’

While the lines reopened at about 7.30am, services may still be cancelled, delayed up to 60 minutes or revised while trains cope with the impact into the afternoon.

Paul Owen, Network Rail’s operations director for the North West route, said: ‘We are working closely with emergency services and train operating companies following a minor incident involving a freight train.

‘Our priority is to always get services back up and running safely to help passengers and freight users get where they need to go.

‘While the network through the Crewe area has been restored, we’re urging people to check the latest travel information with their train operator or National Rail Enquiries.’

    Routes affected by disruption

Here are the six rail companies that were the affected.

-Avanti West Coast between Glasgow Central / Edinburgh / Holyhead and Birmingham New Street, between Glasgow Central and Wolverhampton, between Edinburgh / Glasgow Central / Lancaster / Blackpool North / Manchester Piccadilly / Liverpool Lime Street / Chester / Holyhead / Crewe and London Euston, and also between Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe

-CrossCountry between Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street / Bournemouth

-East Midlands Railway between Newark Castle / Nottingham and Crewe

-London Northwestern Railway between Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe / Birmingham International, between Crewe and Stafford / Birmingham New Street / Northampton / London Euston

-Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe

-Transport for Wales between Manchester Piccadilly and Cardiff Central / Swansea / Carmarthen, between Holyhead / Chester and Crewe and also between Crewe and Shrewsbury / Birmingham International

Passengers could be entitled to compensation if the journeys are delayed, so it is worth keeping hold of your ticket and making note of the journey times.
