Spain Socialists win Catalan vote as separatists lose ground

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist party has won Catalonia’s regional election, as pro-independence factions saw a decline in support.

The Catalan Socialist Party (PSC), led by former Spanish health minister Salvador Illa, made significant gains to secure 42 seats, establishing itself as the clear winner.

According to the Catalan government’s statistics institute, support for independence dipped to 42%, down from 49% in 2017.

During the campaign leading up to the election, discussions about Catalonia’s relationship with the rest of Spain took a back seat to other pressing issues such as the region’s drought and housing crisis.

The hardline Together for Catalonia (JxCat) party, led by former regional president Carles Puigdemont, came in second with 35 seats, reclaiming its position as the primary pro-independence force, ahead of the Catalan Republican Left (ERC).

Nevertheless, nationalist parties collectively experienced a loss in support, resulting in their loss of control over the regional parliament, dealing a blow to the independence movement.

Despite this setback, pro-independence parties have secured significant concessions from the central government in recent years and continue to advocate for a referendum on independence.
