Apple lawsuit: US accuses tech giant of monopolising smartphone market and stifling competition

The United States has filed a groundbreaking lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of monopolising the smartphone market and stifling competition. The lawsuit, filed by the Justice Department, says that Apple exploited its dominance over the iPhone app store to lock in both customers and developers.

According to the legal action, the company is alleged to have engaged in illegal practices aimed at thwarting potential competitor apps and diminishing the appeal of rival products. Apple stands accused of employing tactics to impede competition and maintain its stronghold in the market.

Apple has denied these accusations and has pledged to vigorously contest the lawsuit. The complaint, filed in a federal court in New Jersey with the participation of attorneys general from 16 states, represents one of the most significant challenges to Apple’s practices to date. Over recent years, Apple has faced increasing scrutiny and complaints regarding its business practices.

“Apple has maintained monopoly power in the smartphone market not simply by staying ahead of the competition on the merits but by violating federal anti-trust law,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a press conference announcing the suit.

“Customers should not have to pay higher prices because companies break the law.”
