Bangladesh teacher suspended after allegedly shooting student in exam

A medical school lecturer in Bangladesh has been suspended after reportedly shooting and injuring a student in class.

Raihan Sharif was arrested shortly after the incident, and his suspension came two days later following protests by students at the college.

The injured student had surgery and is still in the hospital.

Dr Sharif is now in police custody and unavailable for comment until he has been assigned a lawyer.

Reports suggest that during an oral exam, an argument led Dr Sharif to allegedly shoot the student in the knee with a gun. Fortunately, the bullet hit the student’s mobile phone, sparing him from life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred in a class of 45 students, who intervened, locked Dr Sharif in a room, and called the police.

Police confiscated Dr Sharif’s illegal pistol, along with another gun, ammunition, magazines, knives, and daggers found in his possession.

It’s reported that Dr Sharif was known for bringing weapons to school, occasionally displaying them during lectures.

The delay in Dr Sharif’s suspension prompted outrage and demands for his dismissal and severe punishment.

An investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident, which is rare in Bangladesh, where strict gun regulations are in place.
