South Korea doctors told to end strikes and return to work or face arrest

Doctors on strike in South Korea have been threatened with legal action from the government if they do not immediately end the strikes and return to work.

South Korea’s government has also threatened to revoke their medical license if they do not return to work on Thursday.

Around three-quarters of the country’s junior doctors have walked out over the past week causing disruptions and delays to surgeries at major teaching hospitals.

They are striking over government plans to admit more medical students to university each year, to increase the number of doctors in the system.

South Korea has one of the lowest doctor-to-patient ratios among developed countries, and with a rapidly ageing population, the government says there will be a massive shortage of doctors within a decade.
