Sweden’s bid to join Nato clears final hurdle
Sweden has overcome its final hurdle to Nato membership following Hungary’s parliamentary ratification of the bid.
The Scandinavian nation sought to join the defence alliance in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Each existing member must endorse a new entrant, and Hungary had initially hesitated, citing perceived hostility from Sweden.
However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently declared that the two nations were now mutually committed to each other’s defence.
As part of Nato, all members are obligated to aid an ally under attack.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson hailed the development as a “historic day,” marking a significant departure from Sweden’s 200-year neutrality stance.
“Sweden is an exceptional nation, but our decision to join Nato enhances our ability to defend our values and beliefs,” he remarked.
Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised Hungary’s decision, saying that it strengthens and secures the alliance.
