Polls close in Indonesia’s high-stakes election
Millions of people across Indonesia’s 17,000 islands and three time zones have now voted for their future president.
The current frontrunner is former defence minister Prabowo Subianto, a retired general with a bloody human rights record.
There are fears that if Prabowo Subianto is elected, Indonesia is in danger of sliding back towards its authoritarian past.
Ganjar Pranowo, whose party supported outgoing President Widodo’s two previous campaigns, and Anies Baswedan are also in the running.
Unofficial quick count results are expected to come within hours, and if no one secures a simple majority, a run-off vote will be held in June.
